Oh That Pregnancy Glow...

7:09:00 pm

...and they say pregnancy will make:

  • YOUR SKIN GLOW. Your skin will look brighter and more radiant.
  • YOUR HAIR SILKY, HEALTHIER AND THICKER.
  • YOUR SKIN RETAINS MORE MOISTURE DURING PREGNANCY
Unfortunately.. THAT. DID. NOT. HAPPEN. TO. ME. *sigh*

Okay sounds a bit dramatic. Once I knew I was pregnant with my first child, I leap in joy. Yes, I'll get that glow! Yes, my hair will be silky.. thicker.. I'll get that pregnancy glow! What I didn't know was...that glowing thing..is just a MYTH (of course for me)!

Just look at these celebrities (yes I know they have 24/7 make-up entourage)!

My skin was okay during the first and middle of second trimester. The second half of my second trimester I can see changes in my skin. Dark spots and pigmentation started to come out. My underarm suddenly turned dark with patches. That, I can still coop. Suddenly, when I entered the third trimester my skin condition catapulted from okay to worst.

Yes, I did not get the glow..worst my skin got dull, I mean very very dull. The skin colour suddenly changed to greyish without any dash of pink. My face was swollen (must be the water retention and the over eating) and puffy. I feel bloated and heavy and... UGLY. I was still okay until the day when people couldn't recognized me anymore. Seriously was it that bad?? It got to a point where I was so stressful that I would cry and keep asking my husband was it that bad? Do I still looked like before? I'd stand in front the of mirror for hours and kept telling myself that everything was going to be okay. I was thankful that my hubby was there and always say that I looked the same giving me continuous support (although I knew he was lying about the part I still looked the same).

Look at me, you can see the dramatic changes,

1st trimester, second trimester and 3rd trimester

OMG.. I'm so going to keep the last picture inside my daughter's time capsule box! You might not notice but my face was completely covered by dark spots, acne, blemishes, pigmentation.. you name it. But I'm thankful I did not have any severe stretch marks or broken veins (yes I can still rock that short shorts). So did my skin went back to normal? The answer is NOT really I guess. Spots and pigmentation (reduce but still visible) are still there. Skin texture is okay, not that chapped and dry anymore. But thank God! Skin are not that dull anymore.

Hallelujah to the mothers out there who were/is fortunate enough to get the so-called pregnancy glow. Based on my observation (yes, I do observe), women who are pregnant with boys will mostly have the pregnancy glow (lucky you!) while the ones carrying girls might not be fortunate enough. Well, it's not scientifically proven and I guess it might be vice-versa caused by the unstable hormones. I don't expect you to agree on this hihi..

A scene from the movie 'What to Expect When You're Expecting'

I watched this movie when I was pregnant and I can really relate to this. Seriously, pregnancy sucks! Minus the time when you can feel the baby's first heartbeat, movement and the monthly/weekly ultrasound meet-ups. That's the REALITY of pregnancy. I'm not going to bluff that my journey in pregnancy was a bed of roses. Of course it's not, but in the end I think its worth it.

So did you get your pregnancy glow?
